Old Friends Never Die
1981
When I lived on the Boulevard Farm, there was this old Buick resting on concrete cinderblocks in my front yard. When I sat on my front porch, this car is what I saw. As strange as this might sound, we became friends. It was at this time a good friend of mine back in Michigan passed away suddenly from an aneurysm in his brain. His name was Charles “Moose” Pamp. Moose was my roommate during much of the time I worked on my graduate degree at the University of Michigan. Even though Moose was young like me, he was an important leader among the Native American youth of the Great Lakes region. I created “Old Fiends Never Die” to honor the memory of Moose. In this piece, I put my old friend the Buick into orbit around the sun. Moose, too, lives on in the Spirit World. On the front license plate of the car I put an eagle flying in the sky of a setting sun. The eagle represents Moose, flying high.
