Virgo Tiger
1979
This was my second multi-color screenprint, printed in my backyard garage on Ninth Street in Durham. The image is of a beautiful moth that flew into my farmhouse out on the Boulevard Farm. I was struck by the elaborate patterns of orange, black, and two shades of yellow. I hand-cut stencils for each color of ink and printed them one at at time on top of each other through a polyester screen. Polyester fabric gradually replaced the use of silk fabric for screenprinting. Polyester fabric seemed to last forever while silk fabric, being organic, had a more limited life span. I learned a lot with this print of the Virgo Tiger moth on how to increase my accuracy in lining up the different colors.
