Irises

The Iris flower was my mother’s favorite, and I loved it too. We had beautiful irises of several colors in the backyard of our house in Wadesboro, NC. I designed this 11 color print with handcut stencils and a blended blue sky to champion the beauty of the Iris flower. This was my last print in my floral series (“Narcissus,” “Sacred Lotus,” and “Irises”). I would like to give credit to Pottawatomie artist, Woody Crumbo, for inspiring me to do highly detailed separations of screen printed colors. Crumbo was originally from Oklahoma but worked as an artist in his later life in Taos, New Mexico. He produced intricate silkscreen prints of American Indian dancers and scenes from life. Crumbo showed me, in his work, the possibilities of screenprinting. I tried to measure up to his example.
