  • On the Way to Burnsville

    1990

There was a small town named Burnsville in my home county of Anson that used to have its own school, a few businesses, and a small but proud population. Now, it is mostly a crossroads. I was asked by Anson County Arts Council to do a screenprint inspired by the county. I dedicated a weekend to driving all over the county taking photos of all I saw. I photographed the courthouse, rivers, creeks, various monuments, and vistas. While I was traveling to Burnsville to see what remained of that place, I passed a field of cattle. I was struck by the cows and their calves, all brown with white faces and undersides, and random white patches on their backs. These Hereford cows, the silhouette of trees, and the blended blue sky were absolutely beautiful. I worked from my photographs to make five stencils for the cows, grass, trees, and sky to capture the scene. I continued the printing of blended ink for the sky in this print as I had been increasingly doing in many of my prints.
