Birds Carry the Seeds of Life
1978
This print was the third piece I created at the Boulevard Farm. It was inspired by one of the traditional Native American teachings I learned at the Red School House in St. Paul, Minnesota. This kindergarten through twelfth grade school was run by the American Indian Movement as a “Survival School” to teach American Indian kids skills for modern living (reading, writing, math, science, and history) while permeating the curriculum with Native history, philosophy, music, and, language. I was the art teacher. The teaching contained in “The Birds” was that each year in the spring season, the birds fly to the Four Directions and spread the seeds of new life over all of the Earth. This way life is replenished every year and Mother Earth can provide life and sustenance to all the Creation.
