While working at the Red School House in St. Paul, Minnesota, I worked with others to bring prominent musicians to come to the school, perform for the students, and just sit down and tell their stories. Occasionally, we used a volunteer concert promoter from Duluth, Minnesota to help us organize larger fundraising concerts for the Red School House and its sister school, Heart of the Earth School in Minneapolis. We had Arlo Guthrie come to our school and sing Alice’s Restaurant. We had John Hartford, XIT, Buffy Ste. Marie, Dick Gregory, Harry Belafonte, Floyd Westerman, Kris Kristofferson, and Rita Coolidge come in for concerts in larger venues to raise money. This was a lot of fun. I even got to drive a lot of these musicians to and from airports to accommodate their performances.
The offset lithography posters in this exhibit grew from the relationship I developed with the concert promoter from Duluth. His name was Harvey Van Horn and he had a dream of bringing large rock and roll concerts to an underutilized arena in Duluth. Harvey would pay me a little money for each poster I did for him, plus he would give me tickets for two front row seats and two backstage passes. I got to hear some great music and hang out with some very interesting people. I hope you enjoy these posters and are amused by the ticket prices.
