In his 30 years of service to the School as Instructor of Art, Joe Liles was also a practicing artist. His primary medium was serigraphy, or screen-printing, before and during his time at the School. In this medium, Joe produced limited-edition, signed-and-numbered prints on paper of various subjects drawing on his love of nature and science. Each of these prints were printed by hand using a squeegee to press ink through a stencil adhered to a fabric screen. The colors were printed separately with great care taken to register them in proper alignment. Joe also employed the screen-printing medium to produce art on electronic circuit-boards using an ink image on top of copper to act as an acid resist. In his early years as an artist, Joe used the medium of offset lithography to produce single color prints for music concerts and natural scenes. Joe’s work is being made available to the broad NCSSM community to raise funds for the School and the School’s Art Program.
